The field of sport history is constantly transforming as historians of sport take up new and emerging themes, perspectives, and methods. 1 As we discuss in Part 2 , historians of sport are engaging and re-engaging ongoing debates central to the field. Arguably they are also pushing the field of sport history in new and exciting directions. The various ‘turns’ that mark the field have led to new questions and new areas of research and will continue to do so as historians of sport reach into more diverse substantive and methodological areas. The chapters in Part 3 , ‘Emerging Themes’, capture the dynamic essence of the field of sport history as they engage with and feature emerging ideas, topics, approaches, and cross-disciplinary directions. The words of Douglas Booth still ring true in that ‘the diversity of paradigms ... is proof of the discipline’s richness and creativity, its ability to adapt and accommodate fresh approaches and trends, and its development’. 2
