The chapter aims to provide an overview of student-centered learning (SCL) in the European Higher Education Area. It is based on the European University Association’s (EUA) studies and policy work on learning and teaching, including the Trends 2018 survey and the Learning and Teaching Initiative. EUA is the largest and most extensive association of European universities, offering its members a wide range of opportunities to engage in mutual learning and exchange of good practice in the field of higher education and research, and opportunities to influence European policies. The chapter first provides an overview of how the concept of SCL has evolved in European higher education policy documents since the term first appeared in the Bologna Process London Communiqué in 2007. It then shows how current developments in learning and teaching at European higher education institutions create conditions to foster a student-centered approach in learning. The chapter concludes with a reflection on lessons learned from the European University Association’s dialogue with universities, and how SCL could be further enhanced in the context of current higher education learning and teaching trends.
