Community-based learning (CBL) is a pedagogical practice that encompasses a number of educational practices including student volunteerism, experiential learning, service-learning and community-engaged coursework for academic credit. Community-based learning models also have incorporated problem-based service learning, direct service learning, and community-based research. In this chapter, we posit that for students to have meaningful experiences at university, the CBL experiences should have transformational components integrated into the community-based activities. Three different student experiences are examined, and we pose the question of how much of an impact CBL has on the transformational experiences of student learning.
