Abstract

The study of science in China and of Chinese scientific traditions in both modern and ancient times have consistently been some of the more challenging and provocative aspects of Chinese studies. This chapter explores some of the most critical problems, from the Needham question about why China didn’t develop modern science to current approaches that emphasize China’s scientific modernization ‘on its own terms’ and the formation of modern Chinese science.
