Abstract

Public diplomacy (PD) in the United Kingdom can be viewed both in terms of the core structure and those organizations which fall outside this structure but fall within the spectrum of PD activity. While numerous definitions of PD have been offered by both practitioners and theorists, the definition offered by the last PD review stated it was:

Work aiming to inform and engage individuals and organisations overseas, in order to improve understanding of and influence for the United Kingdom in a manner consistent with governmental medium and long term goals.1

More recently the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have begun using the definition that PD “is what we use to achieve our Strategic International Priorities (SPs) through our work with the public overseas.”2
