International political economy—like all academic fields—tells stories about its evolution. This is not just the business of IPE’s intellectual historians. Such narratives are routine to the everyday practice of the field. A sense of how we got here, where we started from and where we might be going are arguably essential to any coordination of scholarly activity within the present. Moreover, as sociologists of knowledge and critical disciplinary historians have noted, the capacity of a particular narrative of a field’s evolution to prevail over others is not necessarily either benign or banal. Indeed control over knowledge about the disciplinary past is one of the primary means through which particular moves in the disciplinary present are justified and legitimized.
