Abstract

It is not a particularly original observation, but one nevertheless worth insisting on, that though economists are very well trained to specify and declare their assumptions when they embark on statistical calculations or algebraic expositions of economic theory, their boasted rigour and intellectual precision tends suddenly to desert them whenever they refer to some general concept or goal which, though it seems to fall broadly into the field of economics, is really highly political.
