Preparing examinees for college admissions tests or K–12 assessment testing is an area of growing concern for educators and measurement experts. Research and practice on this topic span more than 50 years. The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing address responsibilities of test developers and test users in this area in ten separate standards. From the test developer’s perspective, these standards deal with coachability of test item formats, test instructions, and test preparation materials. For test users, relevant standards deal with maintaining test security, respecting intellectual property of test content, and preparing examinees for upcoming tests. Illustrative practices that operationalize these standards are described. Finally, five criteria are identified for evaluating the appropriateness of strategies for preparing examinees for tests, and a research agenda is proposed based on these criteria.
