Abstract

This chapter describes one of the most visible and critical elements in the test development process: the setting of performance standards (i.e., cut scores). The first portion of the chapter presents background on the concept and theory of standard setting. The second section presents a brief description of the contexts in which standard setting occurs. The third section provides and overview of common, foundational elements that are part of nearly all standard setting procedures. The fourth, and most extensive, section comprises detailed treatment of several commonly-used standard setting procedures.
