The Baltic States–the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Estonia–lie on the western edge of the East European plain. The three countries may be regarded as being a cultural, political and economic region despite different historical experiences and an important linguistic division. Latvia has a population of 2.5 million people, Estonia of 1.4 million people, and Lithuania of 3.7 million people.
