This chapter addresses the centrality of teacher expertise in the academic achievement of middle and high school Latino English learners (ELs) and focuses on ways to boost the knowledge and skills of their teachers using standards or principles for effective pedagogy. The standards are used as pedagogical content knowledge and for training; teachers learn about the standards by enacting them during their training. The chapter compares the standards with English as a second language and content area standards and presents professional development samples. It also examines ways to promote collegial working teams for professional growth via team products and co-teaching formats. The chapter concludes with steps to maintain quality teaching of Latino students.
