When [email protected] faculty come together, because we are indeed a small group of faculty stretched out across higher education institutions around the country, there are, in most cases, genuine happy greetings. We often exchange abrazos of solidarity, and smiles of affirmation. We ask each other how we are; how our respective families are doing; we ask about and brainstorm about our academic and personal projects; we talk about the travel we all love to hate; our health is many times a topic of interest and concern; and many times we ask the pervasive question, “how are things going for you?” At that point, the tone often shifts and we begin to use that space of comfort to express the issues that make our work as faculty both difficult and fulfilling. In this chapter we will address the broad topic of [email protected] faculty in the academy from a historical perspective to address the issues that most affect [email protected] faculty and to identify the creative ways we survive and often resist in academelandia.
