Abstract

This chapter summarizes some of the research on adult literacy, and covers: the scale of the problem; a sketch of the background information and theory needed to contextualize the topic; the amount of progress adult literacy learners make; factors that appear to affect their progress (or not), especially confidence-building and computer-assisted instruction; the rigor or otherwise of the research designs used; what works for adult basic skills in the workplace; how long it takes adult learners to achieve educationally significant progress; and whether their progress also brings financial benefit. Along the way some historical information is presented, and finally some implications are drawn for theory, policy, practice, and research.
