Abstract

Formal schooling has long been considered the primary institution for educating youth, fostering their economic mobility, and inculcating societal values. The teaching of reading and writing—and the skills, knowledge, technologies, dispositions, and identities associated with these and other language arts—are likewise usually assumed to belong to the conventional school day and its arrangement and division of subject matters, timings, and architectures.
