Understanding the development of comprehension foregrounds the challenges that children face in learning to understand written texts at different ages and grade levels (Snow, Griffin, & Burns, 2005). It is important for teachers, especially, to understand the nature of comprehension development so that they can understand both the common pathways and the individual differences in their students’ development of comprehension, and have a sound basis for selecting instructional goals, materials, and approaches that foster students’ language and literacy development (Gersten, Fuchs, Williams, & Baker, 2001).
