Abstract

Egypt and Mesopotamia – the valley of the River Nile, and the land between the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates – were the twin cradles of civilization in the ancient Near East. The highly developed, complex societies that arose in the two areas during the fourth millennium BC dominated their respective hinterlands for much of the following four thousand years. Yet, the Egyptian and Mesopotamian heartlands were geographically remote, and the two civilizations – which, to a large extent, remained culturally distinct – came into direct contact only infrequently, when their spheres of influence intersected in the Levant.
