Abstract

Our view of ancient Egyptian culture is largely a product of its words. The modern understanding of ancient Egypt began with the recovery of its words, in Champollion’s decipherment of the Rosetta Stone. Today, every university curriculum of Egyptology requires the study of at least one phase of the Egyptian language and its texts. Generations of Egyptologists have interpreted Egypt’s material remains in light of its words; only in recent years has the opposite approach received equal attention.
