Abstract

I start this chapter with a personal memory of my school days. Every day, upon my return from school, my mother used to ask me: “Has anything bothered you today?” She did not inquire about my grades, but was concerned about my feelings. At that time, I did not understand the reasons behind this question, but it seems to me that it represents an important component of parents’ approaches and attitudes toward schooling; namely, does school provide a supportive climate? Are their children happy at school?
