Abstract

It smells sweet yet refreshing, almost like sweetgrass and peppermint. Each branch has hundreds of tiny, delicate leaves pointing upward. The entire plant is so soft it feels like velvet. As I observe it, I cannot decide on the colour. It is a pale green, that is definite; but it has tints of red coming through—on the stem, on the tips of the leaves … Closer down to the base, a yellow tint reveals itself on a few of the leaves. The delicate leaves are astonishing. (field journal entry, Bailey, “Place, Experience, and the Socio-Ecological” course, August 2009)
