Abstract

In conventional educational settings, the design of teaching and learning has always been the role and responsibility of the individual teacher in the classroom. But in distance education, teachers-in-charge, largely as subject matter experts, could no longer be responsible for the entire teaching and learning transaction. The development of printed and other types of study materials for self-study by distance learners required a team effort with significant input in the educational process from instructional designers and media producers. This brought into the educational process the need for specialized skills in instructional design and media production, and in supporting learning in noncontiguous educational environments.
