Abstract

This chapter offers a guide to current, key literature pertaining to the provision of distance learning library support in higher education. The literature is grouped into a number of core areas: (a) connecting with users by promoting awareness of the library, providing reference services, assessing library services, and meeting the needs of diverse teachers and learners; (b) providing access to resources, particularly through e-resources, electronic course reserves, and document delivery; and (c) promoting information literacy by establishing institutional support, delivering information literacy instruction, developing relevant pedagogical approaches, and assessing information literacy skills. An overview of professional resources is provided at the end of the chapter to assist in further exploration of key issues in the provision of library support to distance learning communities.
