The current scientific view on aging, as outlined in Chapter 48 in this volume, is that it happens by default, as a form of natural entropy that affects everything. In other words, nothing lasts forever – things decay, affairs decline, trees wither, people age. It occurs gradually, as the metabolism slows and changes, eventually giving rise to pathology. However, this process can be retarded and, with more scientific progress, in the long run maybe even prevented, leading not only to long life, but to immortality.
