Abstract

Classical physics started with the works of Galileo, Newton, etc., and developed rapidly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. But by the end of the nineteenth century, physicists encountered some major problems that classical physics could not handle. Two new theories were proposed to handle these problems: the special theory of relativity and the quantum theory. It was quantum theory that shattered the philosophical foundations of classical mechanics.
