During the past few years my research has expanded beyond the speech language pathology clinic and into the broader domain of health communication. In response to a perceived need at some of the sites of practice in which student clinicians train, I began investigating health care interactions across languages and cultures. Using primarily qualitative methods, this research has explored such interactions in the context of a society which has unique characteristics. Not only is this society multilingual but it carries a very complex history of social inequity and asymmetry. Further it has a high and unique disease burden. It has become increasingly clear that qualitative methods and approaches from my primary discipline have a powerful and effective impact beyond our traditional domain.
