Abstract

The Great Recession that began with the burst of the housing bubble in the US in 2007 and spread to the markets of much of the world was in certain ways a tipping point: it gave legitimacy to discussions about the growing instability and long-term problems of transnational, free-market capitalism. The Great Recession also underscored another phenomenon: a large and slowly growing part of the economy, co-operatives, including worker-owned-and-governed ones, in some places out-performed the public or private investor-owned business model (Birchall and Ketilson, 2009).
