Abstract

Pronouncements about the professional advantages of knowing a second language are common in the field of foreign language education. Chief among the claims put forth is that geopolitical developments, the expansion of the global marketplace, and the growth of language minority populations in the United States have created an unprecedented need for a multilingual workforce. A growing body of evidence, including reports of high-level commissions, published academic studies, media stories, and the opinions of experts support these claims and shed light on particular areas of need. This chapter examines this evidence, with a focus on identifying professional opportunities for heritage language speakers in the United States.
