The objective of this paper is to describe the significance of Hindi in the United States and its evolving status as a heritage and foreign language. We explore the history of Indian immigration and the patterns of immigrants’ heritage language use in their new homeland. We also look at the relationship of the Indian heritage community with India and the various efforts toward maintaining and developing Hindi by the Indian heritage community, educational institutions, the federal government, and professional language organizations. In the last section, we briefly discuss important steps that will help promote Hindi as a heritage and nonheritage language in the United States.
