Abstract

Many commercial thoroughfares in areas known as Chinatown, Arab quarter, Punjabi market and so on, welcome cultural tourists. Marketed as ‘ethnic quarters’ (EQs), they often feature in the promotion of cities in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim that are gateways to immigration. However, opinion is divided concerning the direction this is taking in the early twenty-first century. Figure 43.1 Montréal’s historic Chinatown welcomes cultural tourists Source: (Photo by author).
