A quick Google image search for “Muslim women” brings up a sea of black—pictures of bodies covered in the traditional black abaya worn by many Muslim women, eyes peering out from black veils, and women dressed in black, holding machine guns. This sea of blackness has become the Western media’s dominant portrayal of Muslim women. These images and the negative connotations in accompanying texts feed into mounting Islamophobia of the veil. 1
