Abstract

This chapter discusses the current seismic design standards and practices employed in high seismic hazard areas of North America. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Standard 693-2005, Seismic Design of Substations [1] has been adopted as the seismic design standard for substations by many utilities serving these areas of North America as well as other locations worldwide. Consequently, this chapter refers to provisions and examples particularly related to IEEE 693. This chapter is intended to provide general guidance to substation designers on seismic design concepts and the application of IEEE 693 for equipment qualification. Basic steps for securing and protecting components within a given substation are illustrated. The discussion is not intended to be all-inclusive or to provide all the necessary details to undertake such work. For further details and information on this topic, the reader should review the references listed at the end of this chapter.
