Abstract

When you have successfully completed this lesson, you should:

Understand that there is a large body of law and court decisions supporting many of the actions which must be taken by the supervisor/manager in the hiring process, while working with employees, complaints and grievances, and the firing process. A list of some of the pertinent laws is in the “Fundamental Management Information” section.

Recognize the role of minorities in working situations and the function of the supervisor/manager in dealing with employees.

Recognize the special needs of individuals according to their age, their personal handicaps, and their race.

Know about the union and its role in our modern society.

Understand the roles of both the supervisor/manager and the union, and the supervisor’s/manager’s authority in labor relations.

Understand what collective bargaining is and how it works.

Know what unfair labor practices are.

Know some of the important federal labor laws.

Understand the role of the shop steward and how the supervisor/manager works with the steward.

Understand the significance and authority of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
