Abstract

When you have successfully completed this lesson, you should

Understand the relationship between the first-line supervisor and the field personnel, management personnel, and the overall organization.

Recognize many of the important responsibilities of the first-line supervisor.

Understand the reason for the establishment of organizations, their functions, the types of organizations which exist, and understand that the organization is created by people in order to accomplish a goal.

Recognize the supervisor’s place in management and the type of management role which he or she carries out.

Understand what the autocratic style of leadership is and why it is not satisfactory for the type of organization for which you work.

Understand the democratic style of leadership and the participating style of leadership and how each one works so you may choose your own particular style.

Recognize the necessity for a unity of command and control of personnel.

Understand why supervisors fail and thereby how to make yourself a successful supervisor or first-line manager.
