Active ingredients have been inhaled for millennia for various pharmacological actions. Nano-particulate systems provide efficient transport through the pulmonary route and thus have been extensively proposed for the lung drug delivery applications. Inhalation of lipid-based carrier demonstrates great potential for lung drug delivery which on successful entry in the pulmonary route allows the drug release in a controlled manner, further providing enhanced drug retention and minimized drug toxicity with local targeting. The present chapter addresses formulation considerations for lipid based nano-particulate drug delivery for the pulmonary route.
