Irrigation is an ancient practice that predates recorded history. Irrigation has resulted in considerable salination of associated land and water. Surviving the salinity threat requires that the seriousness of the problem be recognized more widely, the processes contributing to salination of irrigated lands be understood, effective control measures be developed and implemented that will sustain the viability of irrigated agriculture, and that practical reclamation measures be implemented to rejuvenate the presently degraded lands.
