Remote sensing applied in urban areas has continued to receive enormous attention mainly due to its capability in deriving and delivering the information essential for planning and managing global cities now containing more than half of the planet’s total population. This topical entry provides a brief overview on some major utilities of remote sensing applied in the urban environment. While remote sensing has predominately been used to extract urban features, we have witnessed a steady and strengthening expansion beyond this domain and into other important and emergent areas to support various efforts toward urban sustainability. This chapter will cover these aspects, along with a discussion on some areas in need of further research.
