Abstract

Terrestrial transpiration and physical evaporation (Et) are important parameters for the surface energy and water budget and have potential feedbacks to weather and climate. This entry introduces the energy and water balance equations, and examines seasonal and regional variability of Et associated with variability of land cover, precipitation, and surface net solar radiation through state-of-the-art 30-year observations and simulations of the land surface over the conterminous United States. Results show that seasonal variability of Et is explained by the mean surface net solar radiation, whereas regional variability of Et is explained by the regional precipitation distribution.
