The physicochemical properties of nitrate (NO3 ) are presented in the context of its environmental fate, along with effects of excess levels on aquatic ecosystems and human and animal health. Two common infiltration-based approaches to removing NO3 from contaminated water—onsite wastewater treatment systems and permeable reactive barriers—are presented. The general mechanisms involved in NO3 removal in these systems as well as the specific microbial processes resulting in net loss of NO3 are discussed.
