Abstract

The probability distribution of surface wind speed is a fundamental characterization of the range of speed values taken and their relative frequency of occurrence. This entry first presents an overview of the general features of any wind speed probability distribution, followed by a discussion of empirical models of the wind speed distribution and the relationship of this distribution to that of vector winds. Finally, a brief discussion of physically based models of the wind speed distribution is presented.
