Abstract

This entry presents the International research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (InterPARES) project, an international multidisciplinary research endeavor that, since 1998, has sought solutions to the issue of long-term preservation of the authenticity of digital records. The entry outlines the goals of the four phases of the project, its membership, methodology, principles, activities, and products, and discusses its conceptual findings—specifically, the concepts of record and of authenticity—and its methodological findings regarding archival appraisal, preservation, and description—specifically, requirements for trusted record-making, record-keeping and records preservation systems, development of systems for managing authentic digital records that meet those requirements, and their implementation in a scalable way in resource-limited organizations. The entry concludes by outlining the present direction of the project and providing a glimpse of its future.
