Abstract

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is the global nongovernmental organization (NGO) representing the interests of museums, galleries, and related heritage institutions and services and their staff. Legally constituted in Paris as an Association in November 1946, ICOM is an independent NGO that represents both museum professionals and museums and related institutions and services, with a total of over 27,000 institutional and personal members in 151 countries. The ICOM’s working languages are French, English, and Spanish, though national committees or individuals may use other languages in official meetings provided they arrange or pay for the necessary additional translation services.
