Abstract

There are many similarities in the history and the evolution of contemporary French archives, museums, and libraries. All three have their roots in the Ancien Régime, but it was the Revolution that imposed their administrative structure. Over the centuries, all three have evoked similar questions and have been the subject of identical political and intellectual debates. At the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century, all three have finally become the object of ambitious public policies. Last, all three are today confronted with profound transformations—often experienced at a dizzying pace of change.
