Abstract

The author notes: “…although a scientist may understand a science to the extent that he or she does science, a second level of understanding, that of understanding his or her understanding, may be absent.” Philosophy of science is about that second level of understanding. That philosophy forms the basis of how and why a scientist conducts research, and conditions the judgments a scientist forms about the value and validity of the results of that research. Peters also addresses implications for library and information science.
