Abstract

This entry presents a history and definition of rare book collections, as well as a description of how they are formed and maintained. There are two major responsibilities that rare book librarians face in their role as stewards of these collections: collections must be made available for use, and at the same time, care must be taken to ensure that delicate, and often unique, materials are preserved to ensure their availability in the future as well.
